History of the Area

NORTHEAST BERKS COUNTY

Northeast Berks County, sometimes known as the East Penn Valley, is composed of 5 boroughs: Fleetwood, Kutztown, Lenhartsville, Lyons and Topton; and 8 Townships: Albany, District, Greenwich, Longswamp, Maidencreek, Maxatawny, Richmond and Rockland. It offers a little bit of everything to the residents. The area has an ample share of all the necessities of food, clothing drugstores, gas stations, banks churches, schools, hardware stores, gift shops, book stores, barber and beauty shops, doctors, dentists, eyeware shops, movie theater and more. Most of the communities have a borough or township park along with swimming pools available to residents and guests. The Tri-Valley YMCA located in Fleetwood serves the area with fitness classes for adults and children, children's day care before and after school, and many other activities on a regular basis.

Another feature of this area is its unique location. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you won't have far to go to find it. Northeast Berks is situated halfway between the cities of Allentown and Reading, (each only 16 miles away). Here you will find theaters, extensive shopping (including the famous "Reading Outlets") an exciting nightlife, along with noted hospitals. New York City and Philadelphia are also easily accessible by Bieber Bus Company in downtown Kutztown. A Center City Philadelphia bus runs several times each day including Sunday and Holidays or you reach the city by car in 1 1/2 hours. New York City can be reached in 2 1/2 hours by the Bieber Bus Company's one stop express which leaves and returns to Kutztown daily. We are 1 1/2 hours from the Poconos, close to 3 ski resorts and 12 miles from the Appalachian Trail for hiking buffs.

All the strong points mentioned combined with the familiarity and friendly atmosphere of a small town make Northeast Berks the "ideal community".
